90th Anniversary Telford Family Fun Day – The Royal British Legion
Sunday the 15th May 2011 saw the TeapotOne team move to Telford Park for The Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
With the weather slightly more blustery and damp than the day before, our spirits were still flying high from the success of our previous event. After finding our way to the venue, during which time Bruce managed to run out of fuel just as he rode onto the slip rode for the M6 Jnc 10A service station, we set up the stall.
Now well practiced in this art, it took no time at all before we were ship-shape and ready to face the public. One of the first to come by was our highlight of the day, a gent who was a veteran of World war II. This chap had been a para in the 1st airborne and had been to some of the places Bruce will be riding through on his trip. Thanks to him, and many men and women like him, the circumstances will be slightly different from when this chap was there.
Unfortunately we didn’t catch his name so if you know who he is, please drop us a line.
The Royal British Legion’s Riders Branch (RBLR) where there in force, and kindly allowed us to set up shop next to their main tent. With their ‘vocal’ support ringing in our ears throughout the day, they are all a great bunch of like minded bikers with huge hearts and a great sense of fun. Bikes of every shape and size were present for the public to clamber and drool over.
Entertainment for the day was laid on by a selection of era themed bands, the highlight of which were ‘The Polka Dot Dolls’ and ‘The Jive Aces’. Both these groups had the whole park jiving, spinning, singing and swooning, even Bruce tapped a toe!
Despite being on stage for prolonged periods, both bands spent time at the TeapotOne stall chatting about the route, the schedule, the charities, and of course – the bike! That question once again shone through with almost everybody asking;
“Why are you taking a sports bike? Are you mental?!”
Ian Clarkson, the Jive Aces’ lead singer, kindly did an impromptu performance of their hit “Bring Me Sunshine” sitting on the bike whilst playing his ukulele. We caught the whole thing on video and will post it on the site as soon as we can.
Thanks to Teresa Greener of The Royal British Legion for giving us the opportunity to be at the event. Thanks also to all the generous people of Telford who came along and kindly donated to such a worthy cause. Lastly, a personal thanks to my cousin Ange and her family, Phil, Kelly, Mikey and Edward. It was great to see you all after so long and I really appreciated you all making the effort, ta X.
