Born Free USA – Exotic Animal Ownership Legislation in Alabama
Alabama may be welcoming to travelers, but it is not a beautiful place for exotic animals. It is one of 5 states with little or no regulations regarding ownership of wildlife. This means that lions, tigers, cougars, wolves, bears, monkeys, alligators, and venomous snakes, among others, may be kept in private homes, in roadside zoos and menageries and other places that are inadequate or abusive in nature.
In addition to the inherent cruelty to the animals as a result of keeping wildlife in captivity, these animals pose grave dangers to human health and safety. By their very nature, exotic animals are unpredictable and are incapable of being domesticated or tamed. Every year, people are attacked and injured by exotic “pets” or exotic animals in roadside zoos; some of the attacks are fatal, and children have too often been the victims.

Born Free works to change and enact laws that prevent private ownership of wildlife. Hopefully Alabama will join West Virginia, the most recent state to pass legislation regulating exotic ownership, and be in the ranks of the other 45 states who are protecting wildlife from this cruelty.
