PC counts down to around-the-world bike ride for charity
A London police officer is exactly one year from setting off on 100,000 miles all terrain charity motorcycle ride in memory of his late mother.
Bruce Smart will begin a life-changing journey on the 1st of October 2012, which will take him 12-16 months to complete. He is hoping to raise a total of £1M for four charities as part of the Teapotone campaign.
Bruce is supporting St Christopher’s Hospice, the cancer hospice that cared for Bruce’s mother Maggie Smart who died in 2008, the Born Free Foundation, the British Legion and the Children’s Trust.
He says: “I decided I was going to ride around the world in July 2008, when my mother passed away from Cancer. She was the spark that set this all off really.
“One day she said to me: “Don’t ever have regrets, look after those you love, but live your life”. That was it, I booked my Direct Access and went for it”.
Bruce is part of the Diplomatic Protection Group, a Specialist Operation branch of London’s Metropolitan Police Service, where Bruce has worked for 10 years. He provides armed protection to Downing Street and the Prime Minister. He will be riding on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and will update his website with regular blog entries and videos throughout his journey.
Bruce says: “Teapotone is not simply a case of taking a motorbike around the world. It will be a journey of extremes for both machine and rider. To take a sports bike around the world in 12-16 months, across desert, over rock, through jungle and swamp, is in itself extraordinary. It will see us visit my charities’ affiliated projects around this earth and witness how others are working together doing whatever they can, to make their bit of the planet that bit better for man, child, & beast”.
Donations can be made directly to each of the charities through the TeapotOne website. Vango is the official outdoor kit supplier for Teapotone. Bruce is currently recruiting backers to support this project. For more information please visit his website: www.teapotone.com
